Hair 024

Sorry about this 'speech', but please read all this beforehand. When recreating this look, I doubt you'll have a professional stylist on hand to work on it for you (unless it's a wedding or prom or whatever). But, if you do it properly, this actually doesn't take too long. It helps to have a friend, parent, or anyone who is capable of actually helping you with this style and not just of throwing it together quickly. This person can help you when it comes to styling the back. The main thing you need to worry about when working on this is the structure of your hair. You'll need to be firm when pinning the curls and such in place, and you're gonna need a lot of kirby grips and hairspray. Otherwise, it'll probably fall apart. Pay attention to detail to prevent any mishaps. Get hairspray that actually holds your hair and doesn't dry it out, make sure your curling iron has a strong clip and make sure the kirby grips are new - that way, they'll hold your hair in place a whole lot better. If you can, get grips in your hair colour so they dont show so much. Make sure you have as much of everything as you need including TIME! Wash your hair the night before. Read through the guide beforehand so you know what to expect. This guide does work for me, and I have naturally straight/wavy hair. You might need to take different steps depending on your hair type and condition. If you have any problems, I'm a bit of a hair expert, so contact me!

1. Brush through all your hair well. Use a 'proper', firm, brush (a cushion brush, for example) to make sure your hair is free of knots, tangles, matting, etc. I reccomend applying a preserving spray or a leave in conditioner that can be used on dry hair. Then, if possible, brush through your hair again with a bristle brush to make it soft. At this point, I'd apply a little anti-frizz gel to keep everything neat, but thats just me. Make sure your hair really is soft and untangled before proceeding.

2. Plug in a curling iron. It can be any size really, but nothing really large. If you can edit the heat settings of your iron, turn it to a medium setting. You don't need intense heat for this hairstyle, but you don't want the iron to be cold either. Now, you're gonna section off parts of your hair. Have a few sectioning clips ready (google them if you don't know what they are. It's easy to buy them from a local store, chemist, whatever. You don't need expensive, professional ones, just any large clip) and then get a cushion brush or another brush like it and brush forward all the hair in front of your ears. Brush it straight down over your face, then tie it with a covered-elastic hairtie and tuck this section behind your left ear (to get used to having it this side, as it's how Taylor's wearing hers). You don't need a sectioning clip for this part. Then, reach behind your head and split the rest of your hair into bunchies. Tie one of these bunchies and pull it over your shoulder, and leave the other one loose. Take the bunchie you left loose and split it horizontally (across), so that you have a top part and a bottom part. Twist the top half and clip it to your scalp, then repeat with the bottom half. Once both of these are in place, untie the bunchie that you pulled over your shoulder, and do the same as you just did on the other side of your hair - but this time, leave the bottom half loose. [Sorry, this step is a bit wordy, but we need to put the hair into sections so it's easier to style. Any stylist will agree. Once again, if you have any troubles with this, contact me through the site/www page].

3. Ok, so all your hair should be sectioned now apart from this one part which has been left loose. Brush through this part if you need to. Get your kirby grips ready, and take your now-heated curling iron. Take a 1-2 inch section of hair (it's most effective to use 1 inch sections in my opinion, but it uses up more grips) and pull it out to one side so you can see it in your mirror. Clip the curling iron onto the end of the hair, and roll it upwards towards your scalp. If your curling iron doesn't have a heat-proof tip, just hold onto the handle to avoid burning, or wear heat-proof gloves. When you reach your scalp (dont actually touch it!) release your clip and, very carefully, slip the hair off the iron. It should still be rolled up, so hold it to your scalp like that. Put down your curling tongs so that you have both hands free. Use the fingers on one hand to keep the curl held to your head, and with the other, take a grip and use it to clip the curl in place. Try to slip the grip halfway through the curl so that it doesnt obscure it (if this doesnt't make sense, think about it a little until it does, or just do what you think is right). Let go and see how well the curl has held - you might need another grip. Voila, you have your first curl! Now that your at this point, it shouldn't take too long to do the rest of your hair... repeat throughout the current section, then release the next one and repeat throughout that section, and so on! As you finish each section, spray it with hairspray to hold it in place.

4.Your hair should now be all in curls clipped to your head! You might want to apply another light coat of hairspray at this point. The only untouched part of your hair now is the hair from in front of your ears, which should be tucked behind your ear. Slip a thin hairband like Taylor's onto your head and make it sit right behind this section (see picture). Release this hair and let it fall into its natural parting - you dont want all this hair pulled to one side, or it'll look odd; however, take the majority of it and pull it to the left of your head, then clip it by your ear. Look at the picture of Taylor to the left, and how the hair is styled over the thin headband she's wearing. Don't pull it too tightly, or it won't look soft, like Taylor's does. Try twisting it very slightly before clipping in place. If you have any short bangs that can't be pulled to the side, incorporate them into the hair style and just leave them out, curling the longer parts at the sides normally with your curling iron.

5. To soften the look, pull out some strands of hair. Be careful when doing this, so you don't jepoardise the entire style - look for strands which are at the sides of your head, closer to your face then to the back of your head. This way, the strands look more articulate instead of just random. Go for any strands of hair which are slightly loose or sticking out, so you dont end up ripping out any of your curls. If you want, curl these strands. You should be all finished now - if you think you need it, apply some more hairspray, but make sure you aren't in danger of drying out your hair. Make sure your curling iron is turned off and left on an inflammable surface to cool... then go and show off your hair!
